Gracias, Lempira

Yesterday we finally made it to Gracias! This is where our orientation is/was supposed to be -- I missed it yesterday, but went for a half day today. (Let's be real, who needs orientation anyway.) My first experience wearing my school uniform...super exciting. Should've taken a photo, I know. I love it here in Gracias! It's SO much different from Tegucigalpa. The school is pretty much on the side of a mountain -- we had to go in a mini van/bus up a dirt "road" for a half hour to get to it. It's really only like 3 miles probably, but the road is ridic -- so many bumps and rocks and potholes. I wish I would have taken my camera so you could see the school...can't have everything though. Gracias is a small city -- all dirt roads -- but I love it. I feel completely safe and the people are all really nice. The central park is awesome too -- there's this little coffee shop in the middle that has a tiny upstairs outdoor patio. And the best part is the slushies are only a dollar! I sure hope I like Catacamas this much!

The plan for me now is basically to tag along with the other teachers until I can make it over to Catacamas. I'm going to one of the other nearby schools -- La Union -- tomorrow, and then to Tegucigalpa on Tuesday or Wednesday, and then onto Catacamas. I'm really excited to see La Union -- I guess it is incredibly rural and the poorest of the schools. I guess they don't even have postal service! Yes, I'm serious, and, yes, I know that sounds crazy.

  1. Jen! So glad to hear you finally made it and that you are having a good time so far! I'm sure you're going to do just fine without much orientation. It would be sweet if we could meet up when you're in Tegus, but I don't have a cell right now and I have no idea what my schedule is going to be like. Oh well. Hope it all goes well!!
