And I thought I had seen rural.

If you ever need a break from civilization, just go to La Union, Honduras, the most rural place on earth. Ok, fine fine fine, that’s extreme. They have running water (sometimes) and they just got electricity a few years ago so they have that too (occasionally). We had to take a two and a half hour ride in the back of a pickup to get there—the last two hours on bumpy dirt roads up and down mountains—and I decided I will never complain about Michigan roads again. Driving through water and passing herds of cows on the road was pretty standard.
It was probably the most beautiful drive I’ve ever taken, but I won’t try to describe it or even post pictures of the view because it doesn’t do it justice (well, that and this janky internet won't actually let me post pictures right now). The little town has one “restaurant” (though the term “restaurant” is debatable since there’s not actually a menu and it’s just out of someone’s house) and a few "pulperias" (little stores out of people's houses). There’s nothing to do there. Literally, not one thing. Okay, fine, that might be extreme, but in the two nights I spend there we basically sat around and looked at each other. Definitely the most remote place I've been. I actually kind of love it. But at the same time, I have a feeling it’s one of those places that seems really cool just because it’s so different and “exotic”; I think actually living there for a year would be a whole different thing.
We went up to the school (up on a mountainside) and the school is beautiful too. Some of the high school classrooms aren’t even finished though (they just got up to 10th grade this year so they are building new classrooms)—so hopefully they at least get the floor put in before classes start! Like I said, all the schools are really different, and this is definitely the poorest one. But what the school lacks in money and resources it makes up for in the view! Wish you all could see it!
Currently in the airport picking up more teachers, and then headed back to Gracias later today. Hopefully make it to Catacamas by Wednesday!
