So I´m sitting eating lunch watching all the guys play soccer (it´s kind of funny to watch them all play soccer in dress pants and ties) and one of my seventh grade students--who is in love with me but who is also the biggest troublemaker in the class....you would think if he actually wanted me to like him he would pay attention in class and stop talking and running amok and hitting people and humping the back of his seat the entire hour...of course it´s probably to get my attention...unfortunately that strategy is working for him. Ok, anyway, not the point. So he´s standing there with his friend just hovering around and I hear him ask his friend in Spanish, "How do you say ´Buen provecho´ in English?" ("Buen provecho" means "Bon appetit" and it´s kind of Honduras´ thing...people ALWAYS say it every time you walk by someone eating anything.) Clearly some of the students haven´t caught on that I speak Spanish. I almost feel bad. Anyway, once again, not the point. So his friend shrugs and goes, "Good province?" So then he comes up to me with a big smile and goes, "Miss Erickson, good province!" So I kind of laughed and he ran away.
Some of my 12th graders don´t realize I speak Spanish either I figured out...they were asking me how to say something in Spanish and one of the girls goes (in Spanish), "No, Miss doesn´t speak Spanish!" So the principal was in there observing and we just looked at each other and tried not to laugh...I´ll see how long it takes them to catch on. I have to catch myself because I always say things like gracias, hola, por favor, adios, etc even if I´m in the states...and then the students freak out. I just tell them I only know the easy words.
And, funny, because my 11th grade guys told me the same thing about Justin -- "Miss, I have friends in 11th grade at the school in Tegucigalpa and I was talking to them yesterday and they are all in love with your brother!" Oh gosh. See what I mean about everyone being in love with you if you are white?! Anyway, if the 11th grade boys (my 11th grade is a tiny class that consists of 4 guys and 1 girl) ask me one more time for my phone number/to hang out/get ice cream....I might just do it. Ok, not really, let´s be real here...but if I don´t get some friends or get out in the community pretty quick here I just might.
Ok, then again, I can add to my list more places I´ve been in Catacamas besides school and church and the supermarket: the park, the bank, and the bakery. I know right. Super exciting. One of the other teachers went with me after school to show me the bank and the bakery (I think they sell smoothies there too so I might check that out tomorrow). We just rode the school bus up there after school, but turns out it´s decently close to my house so I just walked home! So that´s my plan for this weekend and next week. I´m just going to walk around aimlessly (don´t worry mom, not after dark. Yes, people get murdered here more often than I would like but only if they have a legit reason to get murdered.).
Ok why are my blog posts always so long? And I didn´t really even talk about school. I guess you can tell who the English teacher is.
I haven't even found the Verona bakery-you're totally beating me on that social aspect
